Does practice make perfect?
It’s great to have fun and be able to fuck around. But if you want to get any better, discipline IS needed.
How necessary are weekly practices for an improv group?
If everyone’s on 3 teams and in a class, that’s tough. Maybe we shouldn’t be on so many teams. I don’t know.
I do think that we shouldn’t be on so many teams. There. I said it. A lot of this does come from some odd quirk in my brain that hates clutter.
I agree with this.
I think that once you’ve reached a certain point, studying improv becomes less about drilling the fundamentals of scenework and more about trying to do something interesting on a group level (not to say the fundamentals aren’t important). Having fun is all well and good and has its place in the community, but I have the most fun watching and performing with groups that have a clear artistic vision in what they’re going for improv-wise, and are able to execute it. This only works if a group has put in the time and effort to really hammer out something special.
The next fwand could be an indie team.
Of course, I’m saying this as someone who’s technically in one group right now, which doesn’t rehearse regularly and bills itself as an experimental group.
Anyone want to start up something nice?
